Sappi honours printers and their pursuit of print excellence
Friday, 20 August 2010The 2010 Sappi African Printers of the Year gala event held in Sun City on 12 August 2010 was a celebration of print excellence where printers and their winning entries shared the spotlight.
At the glittering event hosted by Master of ceremonies Jo-Anne Strauss and entertained by the group NUBIA, this year's theme of Future Imprint was emphasized by Executive Director Marketing: Sappi Paper and Paper Packaging South Africa, Dinga Mncube: "This year, Sappi not only wants to honour the craft of printing and the legacy of the industry, but also the resilience that businessmen and women in your position have exhibited during the tough economic environment of the last two years."

Following a comprehensive study of international training programmes, Paarl Media has taken the lead in terms of developing an in-house training college. This will provide critical skills to keep pace with the rapid advancements in technology.

Paarl Media Academy of Print
- The revised and upgraded printers trade curriculum was completed in 2009.
- Resource material, assessment criteria and tools were developed.
- Training modules will carry local and international accreditation by the South African Quali?cations Authority (SAQA) and the City and Guilds of London Institute.
Experienced group wide trade training instructors, coaches and mentors within the group have been appointed and trained.
Furthermore, a vision of shared learning, cross training and constant assessment based on specific set standards will ensure critical skills transfer and highly skilled, effective employees. The curriculum follows a holistic approach and includes modules such as: induction to Paarl Media Group’s employment benefits; policies and procedures; conditions of employment; health and safety; technical training theory and the practical application thereof; assessment tools; and criteria to demonstrate and establish competence.
Developing leadership
- In order to enhance management skills within the industry, Paarl Media’s leadership development programme (through the University of Stellenbosch Business School, the Wits University Business School and various other institutions) concentrates on leadership development at all management levels (supervisory to executive).
- Our leadership pipeline programme ensures that potential leaders are identified and earmarked for further advancement and future management positions.
